As we step into a future where computing is ingrained ever deeper in our lives, computing knowledge, in all its varied aspects, are rapidly becoming essentials skills. As today’s children and young adults prepare to head into the workplace of tomorrow, it has become impossible to do so successfully without computing knowledge and skills. Gateway has been providing quality computer education for over two decades and in 2017, celebrated 20 years of service by bringing together Gateway Kids School of Computing and Gateway Centre for Information Technology to establish the Gateway School of Computing. Under the BigSpark brand and helm of Gateway, the Gateway School of Computing continues this legacy, offering personalised instruction in up-to-date skills at modern centres of learning.

Computer Pioneers

Our signature program specially designed for school children aged 4 to 14, consists of 10 courses based on attainment levels within the English National Curriculum corresponding to Key Stages 1-3. For children aged 14 to 16, there are different courses that correspond to Key Stage 4, and prepare students for Edexcel GCSE, IGCSE or O' level assessment. This entire program is validated by Pearson Edexcel and holds the Pearson Assured status.

  • QUALIFICATIONS

    Every course year entitles for an international certificate, validated by Pearson, UK, on successful completion. Students have the choice of receiving certification from Gateway School of Computing too.

    Students who complete Year 8 and 9 have the knowledge and skills to achieve the (ICDL) qualification awarded by the ECDL Foundation Ireland.

    Key Stage 4 courses coach students for public examinations such as Edexcel OL Computing, Edexcel lGCSE IT, Edexcel GCSE ICT, Cambridge OL / IGCSE Computer Studies and Cambridge IGCSE ICT.

  • FURTHER STUDY
    Students wanting to further their knowledge of IT also have the option of going on to the NCC Education Degree Pathway - an affordable way of getting an internationally recognised British Degree in Sri Lanka.

ICT for School Children (Sri Lankan National ICT Syllabus)

As children progress through the school system, they become increasingly responsible for their own learning. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is vital because it allows them to search for the information they need, to organise what they have found and present them in a standard expected by today’s education system. The ICT for School Children course adheres to the ICT syllabus of the Sri Lanka National Curriculum.

This course is best suited for school students of grade 6-9.

IGCSE, O/L and A/L ICT and Computing (Edexcel, Cambridge and Sri Lankan Syllabus)

We offer a number of results-oriented courses, coaching students in local and international Computing/ICT OL and AL examinations. These include Cambridge Ordinary Levels in Computing, Edexcel Ordinary Levels in Computing, Edexcel Ordinary Levels in ICT, Edexcel IGCSE in ICT and Sri Lankan Ordinary Levels in IT.

In these small group classes, each student is provided access to their own state-of-the-art computer and special IT equipment, as well as individual attention by our highly qualified lecturers ensuring students obtain top grades at their examinations. Paper discussions and mock exams too are provided with access to recommended learning material.

iPrimary Computing

A Pearson Edexcel programme, iPrimary Computing equips students to comprehend and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science and information technology. The module also prepares students to be responsible, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.

This course is best suited for children aged 8-12 years who follow the Pearson Edexcel curriculum.

iLower Secondary Computing

Developed to be consistent across the entire Pearson Edexcel iLower Secondary programme, which includes English, mathematics and science, the module teaches students to apply the fundamental concepts of computer science and solve problems by applying information and communication technology (ICT). By founding the fundamental bedrock of computing/ICT, the iLower Secondary Computing programme prepares students for progression to the Pearson Edexcel International iGCSEs.

This course is best suited for students aged 12-14 years who follow the Pearson Edexcel curriculum.

STEM Based Programs


STEM

STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of taking an applied and interdisciplinary approach to educating students in the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). It integrates the four disciplines into a cohesive whole based on real-world applications, and thus students learn a wider range of subjects including, but not limited to, aerospace engineering, astrophysics, astronomy, biochemistry, biomechanics, chemical engineering, nanotechnology, neurobiology, nuclear physics, robotics, engineering, chemistry and computer science.

Given its breadth and importance to the modern world, careers that encompass STEM will make up the bulk of high-quality employment in the future. Immersing your child in this curriculum early on will not only form a solid foundation for their future studies but their careers. Our STEM programme is geared to give your child a head start in the world of tomorrow.

The STEM course offers three levels by age

  • 8+ to 10+ years
  • 10+ to 12+ years
  • 12+ to 14+ years
with each level conducted over 10-12 months and four classes conducted each month of 90 minutes each. Class sizes are limited a maximum of 10 students to ensure students receive all the attention they require from instructors.

Robotics

Robotics is a branch of technology studies that deals with the making, programming and designing of robots. It not only equips your child with knowledge and skill in this highly valuable subject, but also helps foster their creativity and innovation while developing a foundation for science and mathematics in an enjoyable manner.

    The Robotics course offers three levels
  • Basic
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced
Each level will take 12 months to complete. A lesson is of 2 hour duration. The equipment will be provided by us.. To ensure personalised attention class sizes are limited to a maximum of five students.

This course is best suited for children aged 7+ to 11+ years.

AI for Kids

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the new frontier for human interaction with technology; McKinsey Global Institute estimates that 75% of companies could be using some form of AI by 2025. Thus, it is imperative that children learn how AI works and functions. Our AI for Kids programme allows you to introduce your young child to artificial intelligence, machine learning and other ultra-modern technologies through problem-based projects, so she/he can become an active, responsible and successful participants in the brave new world.

This course is best suited for children aged 10-15 years.

Digital Art and Design for Kids

Art is an essential facet of child development. In recent years, mobile devices and computers have been providing children access to virtual platforms where they can create, learn and play with art. Meanwhile possession of at least basic graphic and multimedia design skills are increasingly becoming a norm for many professionals. Our Digital Art and Design for Kids course is designed to develop core skills in creative digital design and to create digital media using professional level graphic design tools.

This course is best suited for children aged 7-14 years.

Coding

Teaching children how to code at a young age can truly set them up for a lifetime of success, giving them an edge no matter what academic area of interest or field of work they may choose to engage in. Our coding classes equip students with fundamental 21st century skills while encouraging them to become proficient problem solvers, gearing them for success in a fast evolving, digital society.

With class sizes restricted to a maximum of three students, each child is guaranteed individual, personalised attention. The programme is conducted across four course levels, by age

  • 6+ to 8+ years old
  • 8+ to 10+ years old
  • 10+ to 12+ years old
  • 12+ to 14+ years old
The course duration is 8-10 months and each lesson lasting an hour long..

ICDL

International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) is a globally recognised computer literacy certification programme. Over 16 million people have engaged with this international qualification, in over 100 countries, through a network of ICDL accredited test centres. The programme defines the skills and competencies necessary to use a computer and common computer applications. Students can choose from the appropriate modules as per their requirements.

ICDL Workforce

Many jobs now entail the use of technology. This requirement continues to grow, even in sectors considered traditional or non-technical. Online tools and mobile apps today perform a huge range of functions which were once paper-based.

The workplace is digital, and in today’s competitive environment, employers highly value digital skills. Having the certified ability to use devices and tools confidently and productively is an effective way for workers to set themselves apart.

ICDL Professional

Digital transformation is affecting every level of work. Many roles have evolved to rely closely on technology, while new sectors and new categories of work are emerging that are entirely technology dependent. Around the world, most professional roles now require digital skills.

ICDL Digital Citizen

ICDL Digital Citizen is specially developed to cater for those with no experience whatsoever of computers and the Internet. ICDL Digital Citizen helps to remove the fear of using a computer for complete novices by using a simple, non-threatening approach to educating individuals in the basic skills of using a computer, email and the Internet.


ICDL Digital Student

ICDL is the world’s leading digital skills certification, which helps people to develop and certify their skills in using a computer. Consisting of a number of modules, with the flexibility for teachers to choose the topics that meet the needs of their students, ICDL is an ideal way for schools to help develop their students’ digital skills.

Schools around the world use ICDL. The programme offers both flexibility, and a range of levels, along with an up-to-date offering that is kept to rigorously high standards around the world. Students can benefit from an internationally recognised certification that is mapped to a number of qualifications frameworks and standards, and which integrates with curricula in several countries.

Scratch

Scratch is a visually appealing and easy to use programming platform that is ideal to help children develop fundamental computer skills for the world of the future. Not only does Scratch help children learn basic programming and key mathematical concepts but also encourages them to think creatively, reason systematically and work collaboratively.

    Our Scratch programmes are available across three levels.
  • Programme IT (7-11-year olds)
  • Animate IT (11-14-year olds)
  • Play IT (14+ year olds)

Coding with Micro:bit

This short workshop is designed for kids who would like to learn coding using the BBC Micro:bit. Micro:bit is a pocket size computer with LED light display, buttons, sensors and a number of input and output which interacts with the user and external environment.

Corporate Training


Gateway School of Computing, the computing wing of BigSpark work closely with education and training partners, local authorities, national and international development organizations as well as employers from all sectors, in the delivery of our programmes.

Our signature IT program for students had been taken by over 45,000 students world over in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Pakistan, Indonesia, Mauritius, Nigeria, China, Dubai, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Georgia and Oman. The program is currently being offered at some leading independent schools such as Gateway College Network, Bishops College, Colombo, St. Thoams’ College Mt. Lavina and Springfield College Network as their regular IT curriculum.

With ICDL training programs we are working in partnership with many government and private sector organizations and higher educational institutes in carrying out special projects for training and certifying employees and students in digital skills.
